Once upon a time Lanta
In the heart of the Lauragais hills, Lanta is a small brick village in Toulouse, mentioned in texts since the Middle Ages. Its first mention dates back to 1196, when the place constituted the suburb of the castrum of the Hunaud de Lanta, of which only the castle mound remains today.
The history of the Hunaud family
First lords of the Lantan community, the Hunaud family From then on, they worked to promote the village thanks to their proximity to several important regional families. They notably became vassals of the Count of Toulouse from 1115. Their name is closely linked to the religious wars that followed one another in the region.
Faithful supporter of the Counts of Toulouse Raymond VI then Raymond VII in the 13th century, the family claims its attachment to the Cathar religionSeveral Hunauds took part in the victory at the Battle of Baziège in 1219, when the Occitans pushed back the crusaders at the gates of Toulouse during the Crusade against the AlbigensiansThe Hunauds were tragically affected by the event when three women in the family died in the Montségur pyre March 16, 1244. Despite the bereavements, the family regained positions of great influence after the annexation of the County of Toulouse to the Kingdom of France. Members of the family were then called upon to occupy high religious and civil functions. head of the Protestants of Toulouse, the Hunaud family led the uprising of the Protestants of the city in March 1562 and played a major role in the 16th century religious wars.
Despite its decline in the 18th century, the history of the Hunaud family is inseparable from that of Lauragais.
The Viscounty of Caraman
In 1306, Bertrand III, Viscount of Lautrec, in debt after the death of his father, was forced to cede his Viscountcy of Lautrec to Philip the Fair. In exchange, the King of France gave him Caraman and 16 surrounding parishes, including that of Lanta, under the title of viscountThe new estate was resold in 1321 to Pierre Duèze, brother of the Pope of Avignon John XXII. The descendants of Pierre Duèze retained ownership of the county until 1670. It then became the property of Pierre-Paul Riquet, founder of the Canal du Midi and remained in the hands of his descendants until the French Revolution.
This eventful history bears witness to the great attraction of the southern aristocracy for the lands of Lanta and Caraman.
