A fortified town founded in the 13th century around the Priory of Saint-Sernin de Goudourville (site of the current cemetery), Ville Nouvelle was established on the plain in the 15th century, along the old Gallo-Roman road (Narbonne-Toulouse), the Via Aquitania. The Saint-Sernin church in Villenouvelle (listed as a historical monument) dates from the 15th-16th century and has a beautiful fortified five-bay bell tower. The 18th century market hall is also listed as a historical monument. Located near the Canal du Midi, the town is crossed by the Way of Saint James (Chemin d'Arles -Via Tolosa).
